Hillary, What is Bandersnatch Designs and where did the name come from?
Bandersnatch Designs is an indie crochet shop on Etsy. The name comes from the Lewis Carroll poem, “Jabberwocky.” “..shun the frumious Bandersnatch.” I’ve always loved the bizarre and fabulous creatures from Alice in Wonderland and the Jabberwocky poem.
How did you get started making your creations?
I first learned to crochet when I was about 8 or 9, but I hated crocheting then. My mother was the one who taught me. I remember getting extremely angry at her for trying to teach me something that was so annoying and hard to learn. I may or may not have thrown down my project and stomped on it haha. It wasn’t until about 2009 when I got into crocheting again. It was getting cold out and I decided that I wanted my own crochet beanie hat. So I went on a search for one, but couldn’t find any that suited my personality. I then came up with the brilliant idea that I should just make my own hats. It started out with very simple designs, and then went on to include a stegosaurus hat, which was my first quirky design.
Where do you get your idea’s, inspirations for your designs?
I get my ideas from a lot of various places. Sometimes I’ll just be watching National Geographic, or Animal Planet and decide…Oh dear god…Can you imagine how much better of a world we would all have if there was such thing as a fox hat, or a narwhal hat? Lately I’ve been getting into more Japanese Kawaii inspired, and steam punk creations (which will be up soon). I want all of my designs to reflect a sense of humor and a bit of my personality. And perhaps it will also reflect the personality of those who wear my creations too. If you’re going to be cold, you might as well look fabulous right? read more
